Create Your Opportunity (CYO)

Turn your creative passion into opportunity by advancing your artistic skills, mentoring young artists, or creating community art and social justice projects. This unique program engages high school youth as developing artists, as mentors, and as creative community leaders. 

Do meaningful, engaging, creative work in your community!

CYO provides High School Youth the time, space, and mentorship to develop and use their creative voices to connect with their community. Learn more about our three CYO branches below.

Art Education/Mentorship

  • Share your passion for creative arts by teaching others
  • Build leadership skills through mentoring children in the arts
  • Work with a mentor to design your own projects, build communication skills with parents, and become some creative kid’s favorite artist!
  • Internships with stipend compensation and hourly paid positions available 
  • Expected program hours: up to 5 hours per week during the school year, up to 20 hours per week paid in summer.

Art Portfolio Cohort

Funded in part by Foundation Trust, this cohort is for HS youth with a plan to continue study in visual arts. It is open to students in Melrose, Malden, Medford, Saugus, Stoneham and Wakefield.

    • Challenge and refine your skills with a group of peers and mentorship from working artists
    • Produce a body of work for advanced education 
    • Connect with the community through your artwork with a commissioned piece
    • Be part of a year end group show at the FYACS gallery
    • Expected program length: May 2023-May 2024

Art for Social Action

  • Harness your passion for social justice and your creative skills into public art
  • Learn how to design, fund, lead and implement a community art project
  • As part of a collaborative group, make connections with your community through a shared interest in social justice. 
  • Expected program length: 2-4 hours/week, 6 months

Interested in more than one area? No problem! You can design a community art project as part of your portfolio, or guide younger artists in a poster making project that focuses on a social justice issue. You Can Create Your Opportunity!
