WELCOME TO OUR NEW ONLINE OFFERINGS! This page changes frequently as our classes are running in two week sessions. Member discounts AND sibling discounts (for some classes) are available. Classes require a device (with a camera) and internet connection.
Art classes require supplies. Click the register button for your class to see the supply list.
Full supply kits for child classes (or paper refills) are available for purchase and FYACS porch pickup. The option to purchase and pickup will come during the registration process.

Altered Books from Home

Learn the basics of creating an altered book from supplies unearthed from your home. An altered book is a multi-media art piece that uses a hardcover book as the starting point. Erika will guide you through the basics of making an altered book and provide individual support as you create in class. Learn how to carve out the book to create a ‘shadowbox’ (inside the book) to support 3D elements, if desired. Google away- there are examples out there to get you thinking!

Practice important aspects of storytelling or poetry with prompts focused around character development, conflict, setting and dialogue. The goal is to produce a more complete short story or series of poems. Bring your creativity and your favorite writing tools. Repeat students welcome!

Paint Night with David Winkler

From the comfort of your home, set up a small space to work, dial in, pour a drink and spend some time with us to create a beautiful acrylic painting and have some fun. We will walk you through each step of making your picture, from layout to color mixing and encourage you to relax and have fun all along the way. Share this virtual event with us and try to let the outside world wash away for just a little while! Get a friend, or a cohabiting teen to join in on the fun.

Everyone has a story. This workshop offers the opportunity to develop a compelling story from start to finish. Lean what makes a good story and how to find the stories in your own life. Then workshop your story and give/receive feedback. The final class provides the option of telling your story to your classmates, family, and class alums.

NEW CLASS! Dive into drawing and explore its endless possibilities, all while admiring famous artists who broke the mold in their time. Explore composition, line, form and texture, in both experiments and finished pieces – all while working on projects inspired by well-known artists, including Warhol, Van Gogh, Picasso, and others!

This is a great opportunity for artists with a passion for drawing to get together, learn from each other, and gain valuable skills. Teen Independent Study

Designed for teens with a drawing, painting, or sculpture project in mind. The goal of this class is to plan, adapt, and create a final piece over the session. Perfect for developing a portfolio piece, or trying something new! We will check in about individual material needs and goals before the start of the class.

Clay Independent Study

Designed for artists with some clay experience and a project in mind. After an initial email consult, we will provide clay and tools needed for your sculpture, bowl, plate or mug, and up to 4 hours of virtual instruction over two weeks. Pieces will be fired and arrangements can be made for painting or glazing for an additional fee.

Capturing life and sharing moments has never been so easy. We take so many pictures with our phones, but how many of them are really worth saving as a favorite?! Use your phone pics to express yourself creatively and intentionally. Learn some easy basics of phone photography and take your snaps to the next level.

Watercolor for Adults

Move beyond the fundamentals of watercolor through observation and experimentation. Learn about color, shape, composition, and transparency, develop confidence and creativity in the medium.
Each class starts with a demo and an introduction to the aims of the class. It ends with a positive discussion between students, a general review of the work achieved, and wishes for the next class.

Creative Writing for Adults
Sunday May 17th

Kick your quarantine blues and play with words! At this virtual writing workshop, you’ll do fun prompts, get tips on craft, and have the option to share your work with the group. An internet connection and computer with a camera are required to participate.
Elizabeth Christopher is a writer whose pieces have appeared in The Writer, HuffPost, and elsewhere. She is the Writing Studio coordinator and an FYACS board member. She is currently working on a historical novel.

Graphic Novels

Before there were graphic novels, there were comic books! We’re going to be working in a shorter format than our 12-week class, and tell a story in 4 illustrated pages. We’ll discuss layout, character design, and other tools used to make our stories clear and exciting.

Drawing for Adults

Drawing is a means of visual representation, and this course will emphasize drawing fundamentals, such as proportion, composition, and layout. Students will learn to create a successful composition, create highlights and shadows to enhance mood, tell a story through object choice arrangement, color, lighting, and mark-making. By the end of the session, students will begin to develop their own sense of style.

This painting class focuses on watercolor and all it has to offer. We’ll explore different techniques and ways to use watercolor in large and small areas to get different effects, and combine it with other materials for fun. Class can be adapted up to age 13.
