Let’s Paint!

IN PERSON OFFERING: This group is all paint, all experiments, and all fun! Young artists use different kinds of paint, including acrylics and watercolor, and various techniques and painting implements to explore the basics of color, form and texture. This program allows for young painters to fully engage in the process of creative exploration. Supplies included.

IN PERSON OFFERING: Through age appropriate art experiences with a variety of media, your child will explore basic art skills with a balance of structure and experimentation. Groups are designed to build problem-solving and expressive skills, as well as reinforce natural creative tendencies. Materials and concepts are presented in a way that takes into account the child’s creative interests, developmental level, and any particular cognitive, social, and emotional needs. Little Masters

IN PERSON OFFERING: Our favorite drop in is now a class! This inquiry-based group will look at work by noted artists and discuss what they see and what they think is happening. The group will then give it a try to create their own work in this artists’ style exploring various art materials. The group will work on expressive vocabulary describing what they see and also using these mindful words to help each other with their own creative process. Supplies included.

Puppet Performance!

IN PERSON OFFERING: Explore the exciting world of puppetry! Each week, students will design and create a new puppet character.  Together, our characters will perform a story! ONLINE OFFERING: Join us for an acting adventure! Our class will work together to create characters and bring them to life in our very own play! Students will learn acting and storytelling techniques, problem solving and connecting with their peers.  Each week, we will create a new scene for our play that will be recorded on our last day of class!

IN PERSON OFFERING: Clay is fun to play with, but the basics are vital! Learn the building blocks of any good hand-built clay sculpture, beyond the “basic” pinch pot to slabs, coils, and how to create a stable piece. More experienced sculptors can learn variations on these forms, perfect their techniques, and transform the familiar into something new! Supplies included.

Mixing Media

IN PERSON OFFERING: This class is a direct result of what artists at our studio tend to do naturally, and we are happy to oblige by adding a little structure and encouraging experiments to achieve new techniques. We’ll explore combinations of 2-D media. We’ll paint on collages, combine textures and drawing, and play with familiar mediums in new and exciting ways. This is perfect for the artist who likes to put it all together! Supplies included.

Scene Studies

ONLINE OFFERING: Grab your friend and sign up for Scene Studies.  This class is designed for partners! Each week, pairs of students will explore a scene and perform for the group.  Students will learn acting techniques and have a chance to become their own playwright.  For our final performance, students will write their own scene with their partner! This performance will be recorded and shared with families!

Intro to Stop Motion Animation 

Ages 12+
6 Wednesdays: 1/13-2/23 (No class 2/16)

ONLINE OFFERING: Whether you’re a beginner or you’ve experimented with animation in the past, this class will teach you some of the fundamentals of animation! We will discuss frame rate, keyframes, tweeting, easing, basic blocking and movement. By the end of your course you will have created a 10 to 30 second stop-motion animation with sound! Here’s the best part- anyone can animate with virtually anything! Grab a camera or smartphone, and some fun objects from around your house and let’s get to work!

Drawing the WHOLE Picture

Graphic Novels!

IN PERSON OFFERING: Combine character drawing and scene illustration to reinvent favorite stories or create your own. Use character and setting design to create worlds and the comic book style pages to go with them. Students can work from original stories, or draw on pre-existing sources for inspiration and ideas. Each student will have at least 4 pages for their re-imagined story and make a book to keep them in. Self-Portraits and Identity

Ages 13+

ONLINE OFFERING! For the longest time, artists have used self portraits to reveal different parts of their identities and document pivotal moments in their lives. In this class, we will be looking at a different artist each week who used self portraits in a variety of ways, and working off of prompts inspired by these artists. We will then create our own self portraits based on what we learned, all while having open conversations about growth and expression through art.
Required Supplies: Artists may work in any 2-D supplies and media that they are comfortable with, such as drawing materials, acrylics, or watercolor paints.

Discovering Poetry
Ages 12+

ONLINE OFFERING! In this workshop, we’ll venture into a variety of poetic forms, explore inventive imagery, and experiment with figurative language, learning from practicing the craft, reading established poets, and sharing out work with each other (if we want to!)

Teen Drawing:
Narrative Illustration

IN PERSON OFFERING: In this class, we’ll work on developing techniques for effective storytelling through our drawings. Artists will decide on a scene that they’d like to illustrate – whether it’s something original, or based off of a book, movie, or video game – and we will work through the process of creating a finished illustration of that scene. We’ll cover composition, thumbnailing techniques, refining our sketches, and taking our drawings to a finished product.Supplies included.

Clay Independent Study

IN PERSON OFFERING: This class is designed for students with some clay experience and an idea (or ideas!) for a piece that they might like to create. Photography Club

A PILOT PROGRAM: This is an opportunity for budding young photographers to connect, share photos and feedback, and learn from each other. Hosted by two HS photography students, the group will engage in creative challenges and learn from their mentors and each other and build their portfolio. There is potential for an art show at the Big Yellow House this spring! A digital camera is encouraged but not required. Lessons from John Singer Sargent

ONLINE OFFERING: John Singer Sargent was an incredible artist who was well-known for his oil portraits.  However, Sargent’s true love were his own watercolor paintings of landscapes throughout Europe and North America.  This workshop examines these landscapes, looking at Sargent’s techniques, colors, composition and use of light and shadow.  Participating painters will be able to create their own art based on Sargent’s work. Both beginner and more experienced painters are welcome. Upon registration, painters will receive an email with information, including a materials list. Creative Writing for Adults: Playing with Point of View

IN PERSON OFFERING: In this class suitable for all experience levels, we’ll explore many of the possibilities that monoprinting has to offer! Monoprint techniques create unique works of art that can be added to, drawn into, and even collaged on top of. Mark making and subtractive techniques will be introduced, and artists will be able to select favorite prints to continue working and drawing into. All necessary materials provided.

IN PERSON OFFERING: This is an opportunity for guidance and feedback in drawing, watercolor, acrylic painting, and mixed media. Sara will take a maximum of 6 artists from beginning to intermediate levels and help you to create a personal goal based on interest and ability. This is a great way to get started with your “I’ve always wanted to….” art goals. Because of the independent nature of the class, there is no supply list, but the instructor will get in touch with you ahead of time about what supplies you should bring, based on your interests.

Discovering Your Palette

ONLINE OFFERING:Watercolor is a joy when we are combining luscious colors together, but how do we do that so that the colors are gorgeous and not muddy? This workshop looks at the colors you use all the time – what are they composed of? What are the properties of those colors? How to best combine them so that the results are what we want. And yes, we will be doing a painting, too! This workshop is designed for both beginner and experienced painters. ONLINE OFFERING: Chiara is coming right to your living room! Every Tuesday she will present a different project that you can do at home in an interactive class. Saturday “Drop In”

IN PERSON OFFERING: A reworking of our Saturday drop ins, Covid-style! The same creative, flexible, art-making options as usual, but with timed pre-registration required. Projects can be adapted to most ages, including preschool and adults! We can’t be as spontaneous as we used to be with our Drop Ins, so registration is required and space is limited to 8 artists. Registration for this program will open by Friday for the next day. Ages 3-5 can register for the 10:00 spot and must have an adult with them. Ages 5+ can register for the 11:15 spot and drop off (of course, you can also register yourself and create too!) Click on the registration button to read about this week’s project!
