NEW Arts in the Afternoon: It’s a Showstopper!
For active, creative kids with a flair for drama! They will have a chance to be actors, playwrights, musicians, and designers! Each week, students will explore a classic folk tale like “Jack and the Beanstalk” or “Hansel and Gretel” as inspiration to create an original play that is shaped by the imaginations of that week’s players. Students will learn the fundamentals of theatre by participating in the entire creative process. Our week will culminate with a performance of our original play!
We at FYACS are so lucky to have Mara Stewart joining us! Mara is an experienced teaching artist, director, choreographer, and performer. She has spent the past six years working with children in performing arts education, including virtual theatre classes and camps. Mara is passionate about theatre arts, working with kids, and fostering a creative and safe learning environment for all students. Learn more about Mara here.
What to expect: Like all of FYACS programs, this program will provide structure while adapting each week to the ages, needs and interests of the group. Staff will have the capacity to split the group in two based on age to allow for more customized learning environments.

Small Artists have BIG imaginations!
Summer Studio is a semi-structured program that balances material exploration, creative problem solving, critical thinking, and art appreciation, while enjoying the same creative self-expression that is always the hallmark of any FYACS experience.
Each day focuses on a different medium with activities that are adaptable to multiple ages. Various styles and artists will be pulled into our work each week, and opportunities will arise for special projects and guest artists.
- Drawing Monday: We focus on drawing materials and their properties, drawing concepts and what these can express to the viewer.
- Painting Tuesday: Experiment in acrylic and watercolor techniques and applications of paint in various styles, and examine and discuss how different artists use paint to express emotion.
- Sculpt your Wednesday: With challenges in clay and construction, explore how sculpture turns space into our “canvas” and making art that is interesting from every angle.
- Collage Thursday: We play with two dimensional design using the media of some of children’s favorite artists.
- All Together Friday! We finish up pieces from the week, find themes in each artist’s portfolio, and make a final piece that puts together some of their favorite parts of the week. Last year, our weekly Art Show will be virtual so all families could enjoy the group’s work safely. Decisions for 2021 will be made this June.
Summer Studio Daily Schedule:
9:00-10:00: Get ready, get set, get creative! Artists can experiment with that day’s materials and themes, test out ideas, and try new things. Different techniques will be encouraged.
10:00-10:15 Look up, Clean up! We look at everyone’s favorite creative experiments of the morning and clean up.
10:20-11:00 Arts OUTSIDE: Artists work in communities as well as in the studio. We’ll head outside for snack, and use our powers of observation to inspire creations in chalk, drawing, and outdoor sculpture. Free play is always an option here. **NOTE: We plan to go outside for part of every day. If it looks like rain, please send your child in shoes that can get wet and a raincoat!
11:00-11:50 Masterwork: We’ll talk about what we experienced that morning, look at images of relevant artists and styles for the day’s media, and make a plan for the final project of the day. Artists design and create a final original piece based on what has inspired them most.
What’s NEW?? Artists that sign up for more than one week will be introduced to new artists, art styles, and have the opportunity to use materials in new ways, and gain mastery over styles and skills. This year, new materials will be introduced with guest artists that combine media and skills.
This program is full, and the waitlist is too.
**All of our programs meet or exceed Covid guidelines issued by the state. We will evaluate this program in June and update our protocols accordingly, specifically the status of our weekly art shows (in-person or virtual)
