Art 1:1

Cost: $195 (7 weeks)

This is an opportunity for guidance and feedback in drawing, watercolor, acrylic painting, and mixed media. Sara will take a maximum of 6 artists from beginning to intermediate levels and help you to create a personal goal based on interest and ability. This is a great way to get started with your “I’ve always wanted to….” art goals. 

Portrait Drawing

7 Wednesdays: 5/4-6/15

The goal of this class is garner a better understanding of the proportions of the human face and create a believable and convincing likeness of the subject. Each week the teacher will lead a guided drawing, using reference photos, in a step by step process to draw a face, or facial features, and then through graphite, charcoal and pastel add shading and/or color.

Art Play for Adults

6 Wednesdays: 5/6-6/10

No time during a busy week to be creative? Then save this time for an artistic shake up. Join us for a series of focused art exercises in various media and discussions with peers to help you cultivate your artistic passion. This course will explore your current studio practices and try to develop a deeper understanding of how you can grow as an artist.

Learn all about the possibilities of watercolor painting, including color, shape, composition, and transparency. The class is designed to develop self-confidence and creativity in the medium. Each class starts with a demo and an introduction to the aims of the class. It ends with a positive discussion between students, a general review of the work achieved, and wishes for the next class. Move beyond the fundamentals through observation and experimentation!

Drawing for Adults

7 Fridays: 5/8-6/19

Drawing is a means of visual representation; this class emphasizes drawing fundamentals such as proportion, composition, and layout. Subject matters will vary for each project. Students will learn to demonstrate skills in various methods. They will learn to arrange their own objects to create a successful composition, create highlights and shadows to enhance mood, tell a story through object choice arrangement, color, lighting, and mark-making. By the end of the session, students will begin to develop their own sense of style.

This is the first of what we hope will be monthly live model figure drawing sessions. Please bring your own supplies and setup. This is not a class; no instruction will be provided.

Metal Sculpture Workshop

Students may explore the possibilities of using light metal to create sculptures and wall pieces using simple tools. Using needle nose pliers and a variety of thin sheet metal, foils, screen, and wire, students will learn how to fabricate forms. Participants may bring designs or photographic images of inspiration for projects, or work from imagination. By the end of the workshop, each participant will have learned a variety of techniques to use in continuing to develop work. 

All Level Painting Workshop

Learn how to create a complete idea in one session from a photograph or studio set-up. You may choose to bring acrylic, pastel, or watercolor. Individual attention with critique at the end of class. (If you have older finished work for critique or correction, bring it along.)

Whether you’re new to improv or looking for a refresher, this class will be an introduction to the concepts, games, and the fundamentals of crafting a great scene. Throughout the multi-week class, participants will expand upon basic building blocks, and develop confidence and creativity!

FYACS is teaming up with Melrose Organizes for Real Equality (MORE) to bring you the third annual In Real Life Storytelling event. On Sunday, March 22nd at 4:00 pm, up to 10 local folks will tell stories based on the theme “Answering the Call.”

Good Grief: Writing about Loss 

This class has concluded; we hope to run it again.

Explore various ways to channel grief, whether one’s own grief or that of others, through writing. We’ll look at memoir to poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction, that can express personal loss. Participants can workshop draft(s) of their writing if they so choose. We’ll discuss excerpts/models from authors including Roger Angell, Donald Hall, Galway Kinnell, Joyce Carol Oates, and award-winning journalists. Please note: this is a supportive writing class about grief but not a grief support group. If you are in need of grief counseling services, please visit your local hospital’s resources site for more information.

Creative Writing Monthly Drop In Sundays

Time: 9:30-11:30 am

Don’t have time to write? Join local writers for a 2 hour Drop-In Writing Workshop to supercharge your creativity with prompts, open writing time and conversation. Led monthly by local writers and members of FYACS Writers’ Studio. Writers of all genres welcome. Space is limited to 12 participants. Bring your laptop, notebook or whatever you use to write. Ages 16+ welcome.

Creative Art Drop In

Every First Tuesday
Time: 7:00-9:00 pm
members: $5 if you bring supplies, $10 if you use ours
nonmembers:
$15/$20 with supplies

Make time for you! Get away from a screen for a night and get your hands busy with something creative. Either bring a project you are working on at home, or let Chiara get you set up with some user friendly supplies and basic instructions. Meet other creatives and spend some time with good people doing creative things.  Ages 16+ are welcome.
