Artful Stories

IN PERSON OFFERING: NOT your usual story time! We choose creative books with a careful eye toward art concepts and themes that emphasize creativity, flexibility, and validation of everyone’s artistic worth, then follow with an art activity that explores fine art concepts in a way that connects to the story.

Let’s Paint!

IN PERSON OFFERING: This group is all paint, all experiments, and all fun! Young artists use different kinds of paint, including acrylics and watercolor, and various techniques and painting implements to explore the basics of color, form and texture. This program allows for young painters to fully engage in the process of creative exploration.

IN PERSON OFFERING: Through age appropriate art experiences with a variety of media, your child will explore basic art skills with a balance of structure and experimentation. Groups are designed to build problem-solving and expressive skills, as well as reinforce natural creative tendencies. Materials and concepts are presented in a way that takes into account the child’s creative interests, developmental level, and any particular cognitive, social, and emotional needs.

Little Masters

IN PERSON OFFERING: Our favorite drop in is now a class! This inquiry-based group will look at work by noted artists and discuss what they see and what they think is happening. The group will then give it a try to create their own work in this artists’ style exploring various art materials. The group will work on expressive vocabulary describing what they see and also using these mindful words to help each other with their own creative process.

Puppet Performance!

IN PERSON OFFERING: Explore the exciting world of puppetry! Each week, students will design and create a new puppet character.  Together, our characters will perform a story! Students will learn acting basics, self expression and confidence in this unique class designed for social distancing and masks!

IN PERSON OFFERING: This class covers it all! We’ll explore new and familiar materials, try multiple projects in both 2-D and 3-D media, while building expressive and problem-solving skills. Projects are presented with an age-appropriate balance of structure and exploration.

IN PERSON OFFERING: Clay is so fun to play with, and the basics are vital! Learn the building blocks of any good hand-built clay sculpture, beyond the “basic” pinch pot to slabs, coils, and how to create a stable piece. More experienced sculptors can learn variations on these forms, perfect their techniques, and transform the familiar into something entirely new!

Mixing Media

IN PERSON OFFERING: This class is a direct result of what artists at our studio tend to do naturally, and we are happy to oblige by adding a little structure and encouraging experiments to achieve new techniques. We’ll explore combinations of 2-D media. We’ll paint on collages, combine textures and drawing, and play with familiar mediums in new and exciting ways. This is perfect for the artist who likes to put it all together!

IN PERSON OFFERING: While acrylic and watercolor paints may be familiar mediums to young artists, we’re going to expand on previous knowledge and introduce new concepts in color theory, composition, and strategies for our paintings. We’ll balance imagination and real-life observation to create a series of studies and final paintings in both acrylic paint and watercolor.

Scene Studies

ONLINE OFFERING! Grab your friend and sign up for Scene Studies.  This class is designed for partners! Each week, pairs of students will explore a scene and perform for the group.  Students will learn acting techniques and have a chance to become their own playwright.  For our final performance, students will write their own scene with their partner! This performance will be recorded and shared with families!

Creative Arts Step UP

IN PERSON OFFERING: This class opens up the opportunity for artists to take creative risks while exploring new perspectives and materials. We’ll encourage artists to see favorite subjects in a new way, and learn more about how artists create interesting compositions as we develop work in multiple mediums. 

Comics:
Treasure Hunt

Ages 8-12

IN PERSON OFFERING: Explore storytelling in the form of one-page comics. This session: The Treasure Hunt — What will our characters find, and who’s going to help them along the way? We’ll dive into panel construction, dialogue, and drawing techniques to create engaging visual stories. Each student will end the class with a complete, one-page comic. As always, our themes are a jumping-off point, and artists may pursue other stories that they’re interested in! 

Clay Works

IN PERSON OFFERING: This class will explore the fundamentals that make clay pieces work – with emphasis on expanding on forms that artists may already know, as well as introducing new techniques. Students will gain confidence as they learn the skills to problem-solve and create stable clay sculptures, with freedom to expand on projects in directions of personal interest. Note: This class is full but we will take this age group in Clay Independent Study (see the next age bracket).

Self Portraits
and Identity

ONLINE OFFERING! For the longest time, artists have used self portraits to reveal different parts of their identities and document pivotal moments in their lives. In this class, we will be looking at a different artist each week who used self portraits in a variety of ways, and working off of prompts inspired by these artists. We will then create our own self portraits based on what we learned, all while having open conversations about growth and expression through art. Artists may work in any 2-D supplies and media that they are comfortable with – such as drawing materials, acrylics, watercolor paints, or collage.

Monologues

ONLINE OFFERING! This online workshop is geared towards actors who are looking to brush up on their monologue skills, either for auditions or performance. Although theater may look different in the coming year, this online class will cover the foundations of delivering a good monologue – whether it’s on stage, or to your family and friends!

iPad Art

IN PERSON OFFERING: Just like with any other medium, having confidence in working digitally requires a toolbox of techniques, and ways to use them. With so many options at your fingertips, it can be difficult to know what to use, and when! We’ll cover a range of digital art skills with interactive demos, and students will be able to apply those skills as they develop pieces of their own choosing throughout the class. *An Apple Pencil or other compatible stylus and an  iPad with the Procreate app installed are required for this class*

IN PERSON OFFERING: This class is perfect for older artists who want to work in several different mediums, and learn more techniques for each along the way. Artists will be encouraged to see favorite subjects in a new way, where they can learn more about how to create interesting compositions, and develop work in multiple mediums like collage, watercolor, clay, or printmaking.

IN PERSON OFFERING: Explore unexpected combinations of various media and art techniques – we’ll try methods and mediums including alcohol inks, working on synthetic papers, and even house paint! Each student will create two pieces of art based on a theme or personal interest. Over this four-week session, students are encouraged to bring in personal materials, photo references, and creativity to the process. 

Teen Drawing:

IN PERSON OFFERING: Character drawing can be an integral part of creating – whether for illustrations, comics, or just for fun! We’ll do a deep-dive into what makes a design work, and explore different versions of our characters to create recognizable, dynamic designs – whether we’re drawing people, animals, or aliens! Students can work in their chosen style – from more realistic, to cartoon or anime-style characters, and will have at least one finished character design by the end of class!

Clay Independent Study

IN PERSON OFFERING: This class is designed for students with some clay experience and an idea (or ideas!) for a piece that they might like to create. Students will be able to build on current knowledge and learn new techniques to help them further their projects. We’ll provide materials, firing, and instruction to help artists plan a project that can be completed over the course of this four-week class.

IN PERSON OFFERING: We provide a wooden box and all the materials and technical support to let your creativity loose. Explore the possibilities that bringing together seemingly-unrelated objects can provide, and create your own unique work of art. 

Bring your treasures; Family photos, ticket stubs, bottle caps…look in your pantry for interesting labels on boxes or bottles, pull out a box of mementos, find old toys your children have discarded, a scrap of a favorite old shirt… Any combination of these can be the start of your piece of art. Bring as much potential material as you would like, or you can work from our supplies!

IN PERSON OFFERING: Learn all about the possibilities of watercolor painting, including color, shape, composition, and transparency. The class is designed to develop self-confidence and creativity in the medium. Each class starts with a demo and an introduction to the aims of the class. It ends with a positive discussion between students, a general review of the work achieved, and wishes for the next class. Move beyond the fundamentals through observation and experimentation!

IN PERSON OFFERING: In this class suitable for all experience levels, we’ll explore many of the possibilities that monoprinting has to offer! Monoprint techniques create unique works of art that can be added to, drawn into, and even collaged on top of. Mark making and subtractive techniques will be introduced, and artists will be able to select favorite prints to continue working and drawing into. All necessary materials provided.

IN PERSON OFFERING: This is an opportunity for guidance and feedback in drawing, watercolor, acrylic painting, and mixed media. Sara will take a maximum of 6 artists from beginning to intermediate levels and help you to create a personal goal based on interest and ability. This is a great way to get started with your “I’ve always wanted to….” art goals. Because of the independent nature of the class, there is no supply list, but the instructor will get in touch with you ahead of time about what supplies you should bring, based on your interests.

Creative Writing for Adults

We’ll take a closer look at details, how to make them consistent within the context of the writing, and unique to the author’s voice. We’ll take a closer look at published author’s descriptive techniques and try our own hand at description through writing prompts and exercises. The month’s facilitator is Sara Desmond.

Memoir 101

IN PERSON OFFERING! “Write what you know” is one of the most common best practices in starting to write. This 5-week workshop will offer some additional instruction beyond this simple rule on writing autobiography, memoir, creative nonfiction, or personal essays about your own life and self. We’ve all got stories to tell that are worth writing down. Join a supportive group of writers led by an expert writing facilitator for five weeks of exploration into the various forms of personal storytelling.

Coffee Painting

ONLINE OFFERING: Coffee painting is an unusual but exciting form of painting.  We will actually be painting with dilutions of instant coffee and water! Following  registration, you will receive an email with instructions about how to make your own coffee dilutions.  The only other supplies you will need are watercolor paper, brushes, a pencil and eraser, paper towels and a container of water.

IN PERSON OFFERING: A reworking of our Saturday drop ins, Covid-style! The same creative, flexible, art-making options as usual, but with timed pre-registration required. Projects can be adapted to most ages, including preschool — and adults! We can’t be as spontaneous as we used to be with our Drop Ins, so registration is required and space is limited to 8 artists. Registration for this program will open Friday for the next day. Ages 3-5 can register for the 10:00 spot and must have an adult with them. Ages 5+ can register for the 11:15 spot and drop off (of course, you can also register yourself and stay and play too!)
