Let’s Paint!

Ages 4-6

This group is all paint, all experiments, and all fun! Young artists use different kinds of paint, including acrylics and watercolor, and various techniques and painting implements to explore the basics of color, form and texture. This program allows for young painters to fully engage in the process of creative exploration. Supplies included.

Creative Arts Junior

Explore basic art skills with a balance of structure and experimentation. Groups are designed to build problem-solving and expressive skills, as well as reinforce natural creative tendencies. Varied materials and art concepts are presented in a way that takes into account the child’s creative interests, developmental level, and any particular cognitive, social, and emotional needs. Little Masters

Ages 4-6

This inquiry-based group will look at work by noted artists and discuss what they see and what they think is happening. The group will then give it a try to create their own work in this artists’ style exploring various art materials. The group will work on expressive vocabulary describing what they see and also using these mindful words to help each other with their own creative process. Supplies included.

Puppet Performances!

Explore the exciting world of puppetry! Each week, students will design and create a new puppet character. Together, our characters will perform a story! Using inspiration from our favorite things, real life, and other artists, we’ll dive into the drawing process to explore its endless possibilities. They ALL want to paint. It’s true. While acrylic and watercolor paints may be familiar mediums to young artists, in this all painting class we’re going to expand on previous knowledge and introduce new concepts in color theory, composition, and strategies for our paintings. We’ll balance imagination and real-life observation to create a series of studies and final paintings in both acrylic paint and watercolor. Supplies included.

Scene Studies

Grab your friend and sign up for Scene Studies IN PERSON!  This class is designed for partners! Each week, pairs of students will explore a scene and perform for the group.  Students will learn acting techniques and have a chance to become their own playwright. Students will work towards writing their own scene and acting it out during our final class.

Assemblage Art

Inspired by the great artists Joseph Cornell, Betye Saar, and Louise Nevelson, this course focuses on the beautiful niche world of assemblage art. Students will learn about the history of assemblage, with its diversity and endless possibilities for creating new worlds to display. Using materials like found objects, shadow boxes, old books, wood, elements from nature, and personal mementos, we will sculpt a story! Supplies included.

Mixing Media

This class is a direct result of what artists at our studio tend to do naturally, and we are happy to oblige by adding a little structure and encouraging experiments to achieve new techniques. We’ll explore the potential of combinations of two and three dimensional media. We’ll paint on collages, combine familiar mediums in new and exciting ways to create exciting compositions. This is for the artist who likes to put it all together! Supplies included.

Sculpture

In this class we’ll do a more in depth exploration of what makes a sculpture, take our time with thoughtful planning, and push boundaries with the medium. Wire, plaster, wood, and found objects will all come into play, and thinking bigger and bolder is the name of the game! Students will practice larger sculptures with scaled mock-ups, learn how to engineer 2D sketches into a 3D reality, and balance art elements like form and color. Supplies included.

Drawing the WHOLE Picture

In this drawing class, we’ll work on projects that build on our artist’s interests, exploring different techniques through engaging subjects. Individual instruction will help your young artist learn the fundamentals of building a drawing and developing a personal style, building on what they already know, and encouraging exploration and experimentation. Painter’s Studio

This is an opportunity for older artists to develop their skills in acrylic or watercolor painting. Projects will be based on individual student interest, so this is a great chance for motivated students to learn new techniques while working on self-determined projects. More structure is available for students who may need it, but, as always, artists are encouraged to bring their own ideas to class! Supplies included.

Books are always personal – whether a novel you’ve read a hundred times, or a journal that records your life. Artists often use books to explore  themes or subjects that interest them. We’ll create our own books around a theme, designing everything from the individual pages using different types of media, to the covers and cases or boxes to put them in! This was one of our most popular MS/HS offerings this summer. Supplies included.

Teen Open Studio

This is a small, independent group for self-directed teenage artists who want to improve their drawing, painting, sculpture, or design skills. Artists’ interests and abilities are assessed, and personal instruction in specific media is offered. We work one on one with artists to help them develop a personal style, challenge creative skills, take risks and try new materials. Acceptance, encouragement, and constructive collaboration is encouraged among artists. Supplies included.

Stand out from the crowded college application pool! The college application essay is the only opportunity students have to show schools who they are and what they care about. The story you choose – and the way you tell that story – can make all the difference between an acceptance and a rejection. Join this informative discussion on what admissions officers are looking for, how to choose the story you want to tell, picking the right prompt, Do’s and Don’ts, and more! Walk away from this hour with an idea for your essay, feeling ready and excited to start writing! This session is for high school seniors and juniors (and their caregivers) applying for college. It will be offered online via Zoom.

Teen Writers Monthly MeetUp

Come invent the next alternative reality, write poetry not soaked in sentimentality, create the next Hunger Games or channel your inner J.K. Rowling. At our first MeetUp in October, we’ll take a look at Steven King and other masters of suspense to begin a story that will raise the hairs on the backs of your readers’ necks!  MeetUps run monthly with no long-term commitment. Can make it in October but have a conflict in November? No sweat! Attend in person or via Zoom, and join us when you can. Each MeetUp topic will be posted several weeks in advance.

Photography Club

Our Photography Club was so successful last fall that we’d like to bring it back if there is sufficient interest. It is an opportunity for budding young photographers to connect, share photos and feedback, and learn from each other. Hosted by two HS photography students, the group will engage in creative challenges and learn from their mentors and each other and build their portfolio. This is an opportunity for guidance and feedback in drawing, watercolor, acrylic painting, and mixed media. Sara will take a maximum of 6 artists from beginning to intermediate levels and help you to create a personal goal based on interest and ability. This is a great way to get started with your “I’ve always wanted to….” art goals. Because of the independent nature of the class, there is no supply list, but the instructor will get in touch with you ahead of time about what supplies you should bring based on your interests. Participants purchase their own supplies.

This course focuses on the process of art-making as meditative, restorative, and inspiring. Like yoga for your creative mind, exercises in focus, letting go, mark-making, and exploration encourage new thinking and push boundaries. The focus is process, not product, though you may find exciting buds for new projects. This is a great class for creative professionals to expand creative thinking as well as anyone looking to open their creative process!
Materials: Please bring a sketchbook. All other materials provided; you are welcome to bring in any additional ephemera, ongoing projects, and materials if desired.

Writing Family Connections

Mother, father, sister, brother, crazy uncle, eccentric aunt. Flawed or fabulous, family shapes who we are. In this month’s creative writing session, we’ll use writing prompts inspired by The Boston Globe Magazine’s “Connections” page to explore a family member important to you. You’ll walk away with the start of a personal essay about a transformative relationship. This session will meet in person as well as live via Zoom for those who need to join the session remotely.

Flash Fiction!

Join us this month for an exploration of Flash Fiction. Sometimes lyrical like a poem, sometimes like a scene or a short short story, Flash Fiction is challenging to define because it can take so many forms. Watercolor Pouring

Loosen up your watercolor paintings while adding some pop and sparkle with watercolor pouring!  Pouring can give you an underpainting with transparent, transitioning colors.  This technique works for all types of paintings (landscapes, still life, florals, etc.), and is appropriate for beginner and well as more advanced painters. Artists in this workshop will be creating a landscape with a colorful, poured underpainting.  The landscape photo and a drawing will be provided to  participating painters. Supplies included; artists can take home their watercolor palettes.

Writing the Ten Minute Play

What makes a good drama? Learn and practice the essential elements of playwriting with Emerson College professor, author, and theatre critic Josh Polster. Discuss dramatic structures, genres, and styles, and how to write complex characters, compelling dialogue, and vivid settings that connect with audiences. Read short examples/models from published plays, share and discuss your work, and leave this class with a better understanding of the craft of playwriting (skills applicable to other forms of dramatic writing) and a draft of a ten-minute script.

Drop in is BACK! Come when you can, stay for an hour, and create with Chiara. Projects change week to week, each with a balance of structure and creativity so everyone walks away with something. Children 5+ can be dropped off. 

**Please email ahead of time for children 18 months-4 years so we can prepare an adapted activity
***Adults are always welcome to come alone, or with a child, and participate too!
Adults creating a project separate from their child must pay an additional fee.

This is a semi structured, low key, arts after school program for students in 4th and 5th grade. Small group activities will be run by HS staff, supervised by Kris Rodolico, FYACS Director. There will be opportunities for outside time, structured art activities, open art, and homework/reading time. No transportation provided. 
Sessions: To guarantee staffing, families must commit to 4-6 weeks at a time.
