Small Artists have BIG Imaginations! Summer Studio is a semi-structured program that balances material exploration, creative problem solving, critical thinking, and art appreciation, while enjoying the same creative self-expression that is always the hallmark of any FYA experience.
Each day focuses on a different medium with activities that are adaptable to multiple ages. Various styles and artists will be pulled into our work each week:
Mondays: Drawing We focus on drawing materials (chalk, oil pastel, pencil), properties of each, and the concepts of drawing (line, texture, shape) and what these can express to the viewer.
Tuesdays: Painting Experiment in acrylic, watercolor, techniques and applications of paint in various styles, and examine and discuss how different artists use paint to express emotion.
Wednesdays: Sculpture With challenges in clay and construction, explore how sculpture turns space into our “canvas” and making art that is interesting from every angle.
Thursdays: Collage We play with two dimensional design using the media of some of children’s favorite artists.
Fridays: All together now! We finish up pieces from the week, find themes in each artist’s portfolio, and make one final piece that puts together some of their favorite parts of the week. Please come 15 minutes early so you can attend our Art Show!
Summer Studio Daily Schedule:
9:00-9:45 Brainstorm: There will be several stations set up where artists can play, experiment with that day’s materials and how they work. Different techniques will be encouraged.
9:45-10:00 Look up, Clean up! Artists will look around at others work and pin up their favorite ideas from the morning. The group will clean up together.
10:00-10:45 Artist Circle: We’ll have snack, talk about what we experienced that morning, and look at books and images of relevant artists and styles for the day’s media, and make a plan for their final project of the day. *If the weather cooperates, the group will walk to the playground behind the church (Livermore Park) to get moving, and do some nature drawing or chalk art.
10:50-11:50 Masterwork: Artists take what they’ve learned and design/create a final original piece based on what has inspired them most.
Repetition is important to artists, especially young ones. Artists that sign up for more than one week will be introduced to new artists, art styles, and have the opportunity to use materials in new ways, and gain mastery over styles and skills.
Open Studio: Independent Study Grades 4-12
Weeks of July 6, 13, 20, 27 Aug 3, 10, 17
Tuition: $50 per two hour block ($45 members)
This has long been our most flexible and successful summer option which allows artists to sign up for individual hours and days that fit your family schedule. These are small, independent groups for young artists wanting to dive into an independent project, explore multiple forms of expression, or learn a new technique.
Kris and Chiara work with each artist to design and develop projects based on age, interest and ability levels, taking into account the number of hours he or she will be attending Open Studio. Drawing, painting, mixed media, collage, clay, plaster are all options. Because each hour is limited to 8 artists, there will be plenty of individual attention for your artist to learn how to take his or her creative expression to the next level. Having a two hour window enables artists to dive in deeply.
Please note: Although you can use these times as a drop in, if you are not pre-registered your child may be limited in the kinds of supplies and projects he or she can do (for example, clay and plaster wouldn’t be options, nor would multi-day paintings). Registration allows us to best serve the needs of your artist and plan ahead.
7 Wednesdays beginning July 8th 7:00-8:15pm
Tuition: $110/4 classes ($100 members), $25 per additional ($20 members).
This is a great opportunity for artists with a passion for drawing to get together, learn from each other and gain valuable skills. The group will meet weekly; artists can work independent study style on drawings from manga, cartoon character development to classical rendering and composition building. The group will meet for 6 Wednesdays, but with flexible registration. Sign up for just the ones you can make!
