Sculpture Exploration

In this 3D adventure tailored to our younger sculptors, we will have a wide range of materials and techniques to broaden each artist’s understanding of sculpture! Using fun prompts, some structural problem solving, a touch of art history, and interesting materials like found objects and foil, we’ll carve out a new artistic path.

This inquiry-based group will look at work by noted artists and discuss what they see and what they think is happening. The group will then give it a try to create their own work in this artists’ style exploring various art materials. The group will work on expressive vocabulary describing what they see and also using these mindful words to help each other with their own creative process. Supplies included.

Art and Science pair perfectly in this experiment-based class devoted to process and discovery. Create your own lava lamps, rainbow water, and more. Artists will get to play with a variety of media, exploring interactions and changes as they make their pieces.

Explore basic art skills with a balance of structure and experimentation. Groups are designed to build problem-solving and expressive skills, as well as reinforce natural creative tendencies. Varied materials and art concepts are presented in a way that takes into account the child’s creative interests, developmental level, and any particular cognitive, social, and emotional needs. Supplies included.

This class is appropriate for Grades K-1. Explore the exciting world of acting and fairytales. During the first few weeks of class, we will explore different stories and students will bring the books to life with a series of acting exercises and games. During the last 3 weeks of class, we will focus on one book and students will have the opportunity to create a short play based on that fairytale.  We will rehearse our show and prepare for our big performance on the last day of class! Students will learn acting basics, self-expression, and confidence in this fun and active class.

Each week, we will create a new scene for our play that will be recorded on our last day of class!

Mini World Makers

If you like miniature worlds full of magic, make believe, and maybe even fairies, this class is sure to spark your creativity! In this 6-week class, students will use a variety of materials and objects to build their mini world, complete with map drawing. Mini worlds can be built in pots, like fairy gardens, as well as shoe boxes, lunch boxes, and small vintage suitcases, with plenty of room for individual directions and creative choices!

This class is a direct result of what artists at our studio tend to do naturally, and we are happy to oblige by adding a little structure and encouraging experiments to achieve new techniques. We’ll explore the potential of combinations of 2D and 3D Media We’ll paint on collages, combine textures and drawing, and play with familiar mediums in new and exciting ways to create exciting composition. This is for the artist who likes to put it all together!

Students will learn acting techniques, explore creative theater games and work as an ensemble to create a play. Everyone will have a chance to be actors, playwrights, musicians, and designers! Students will work together to develop their characters, the plot and self-author their lines for our show.

Showtime will take place at 5:30 on the last day of class.

Wire, plaster, wood, and found objects will all come into play, and thinking bigger and bolder is the name of the game! Students will practice larger sculptures with scaled mock-ups, learn how to engineer 2D sketches into a 3D reality, and balance art elements like form and color.

Drawing the Whole Picture

Ages 8-12

In this drawing class, we’ll work on projects that build on our artist’s interests, exploring different techniques through engaging subjects. This is a great opportunity for artists with a passion for drawing to get together, learn from each other, and gain valuable skills with Amy as their guide. This class is perfect for motivated middle schoolers who want a chance to deep-dive into a project of their choice. Middle schoolers will have the chance to brainstorm, plan, and create their own projects, guided by Carson. Students will create either one large project, or a small series of works over the course of seven classes, and learn about the process of creating a more involved art piece. Tuition includes materials, and students will have options to create either 2D or 3D works, exclusive of clay.

Just like with any other medium, having confidence in working digitally requires a toolbox of techniques, and ways to use them. With so many options at your fingertips, it can be difficult to know what to use, and when! We’ll cover a range of digital art skills for artists of all levels of experience, with interactive demos, and students will be able to apply those skills as they develop a final piece throughout the class.

*An Apple Pencil and a compatible iPad with the ProCreate app installed are required for this class*

Adult Painting

Adults! Come learn or build on your painting skills in the water-based painting media of your choice. Work in acrylics or in watercolors to create your pieces, with instruction specific to your desired project. This is an opportunity for guidance and feedback in drawing, watercolor, acrylic painting, and mixed media. Sara will take a maximum of 6 artists from beginning to intermediate levels and help you to create a personal goal based on interest and ability. This is a great way to get started with your “I’ve always wanted to….” art goals.

Because of the independent nature of the class, there is no supply list, but the instructor will get in touch with you ahead of time about what supplies you should bring, based on your interests.

Monthly Writing for Adults: Playing with Time

Pacing and the manipulation of time is a critical aspect of story-telling. But how do writers decide when to begin the story, when to slow down, speed up or project events in the future? How does pacing and timing increase drama, intensity and meaning? We’ll take a look at a few examples of time manipulation in the hands of published authors and try manipulating our own narratives using various prompts and exercises.

After School Art Club

4th & 5th Grade

This is a semi structured, arts after school program for students in 4th and 5th grade. Small group activities will be run by HS staff, supervised by Kris Rodolico, FYACS Director. There will be outside time (weather permitting), structured art activities, open art time, and homework/reading time. Transportation not provided.
