Little Masters

This inquiry-based group will look at work by noted artists and discuss what they see and what they think is happening. The group will then give it a try to create their own work in this artists’ style exploring various art materials. The group will work on expressive vocabulary describing what they see and also using these mindful words to help each other with their own creative process. Supplies included.


Exploring Art with Jen

Ages 3-6

Explore basic art skills with a balance of structure and experimentation. Groups are designed to build problem-solving and expressive skills, as well as reinforce natural creative tendencies. Let’s Paint

This group is all paint, all experiments, and all fun! Young artists use different kinds of paint, including acrylics and watercolor, and various techniques and painting implements to explore the basics of color, form and texture. Art and Science pair perfectly in this experiment-based class devoted to process and discovery. Create your own lava lamps, rainbow water, and more. Artists will get to play with a variety of media, exploring interactions and changes as they make their pieces.

If you like miniature worlds full of magic, make believe, and maybe even fairies, this class is sure to spark your creativity! In this 6-week class, students will use a variety of materials and objects to build their mini world, complete with map drawing. Mini worlds can be built in pots, like fairy gardens, as well as shoe boxes, lunch boxes, and small vintage suitcases, with plenty of room for individual directions and creative choices! 


Creative Arts 1

Through age appropriate art experiences with a variety of media, your child will explore basic art skills with a a balance of structure and experimentation. Groups are designed to build problem-solving and expressive skills, as well as reinforce your child’s natural creative tendencies. All materials and concepts are presented in a way that takes into account the child’s developmental level, creative interest, and any particular cognitive, social, and emotional needs.


Sculpture Exploration

Ages 6-8

In this 3D adventure tailored to our younger sculptors, we will have a wide range of materials and techniques to broaden each artist’s understanding of sculpture! Using fun prompts, some structural problem solving, a touch of art history, and interesting materials like found objects and foil, we’ll carve out a new artistic path.


Painting Techniques

Ages 7-12

While acrylic and watercolor paints may be familiar mediums to older artists, we’re going to expand on previous knowledge and introduce new concepts in color theory, composition, and strategies for our paintings. We’ll balance imagination and real-life observation to create a series of studies and final paintings in both acrylic paint and watercolor.

In this drawing class, we’ll work on projects that build on our artist’s interests, exploring different techniques through engaging subjects. Individual instruction will help your young artist learn the fundamentals of building a drawing and developing a personal style, building on what they already know, and encouraging exploration and experimentation.


Advanced Mini Worlds

Got a creative kid who loves art in all forms but isn’t sure what their “thing” is yet? This is the place for the artist who wants to try a little of everything. Learn new techniques in drawing, painting, collage, sculpture and engineering, even printmaking! This survey course is a great way for creative kids to get to explore many materials to get a sense of what they prefer.


Sculpture

Ages 8-12

In this class we’ll do a more in depth exploration of what makes a sculpture, take our time with thoughtful planning, and push boundaries with the medium. Wire, plaster, wood, and found objects will all come into play, and thinking bigger and bolder is the name of the game! Students will practice larger sculptures with scaled mock-ups, learn how to engineer 2D sketches into a 3D reality, and balance art elements like form and color.

This is a great opportunity for artists with a passion for drawing to get together, learn from each other, and gain valuable skills with Chiara as their guide. The group will meet weekly; artists can work independent study style on drawings from manga, cartoon character development to classical rendering and composition building.


Teen Open Studio

This is a small, independent group for self-directed teenage artists who want to improve their drawing, painting, sculpture, or design skills. Artists’ interests and abilities are assessed, and personal instruction in specific media is offered. We work one on one with artists to help them develop a personal style, challenge creative skills, take risks and try new materials. Acceptance, encouragement, and constructive collaboration is encouraged among artist.

**Participants have the opportunity to publish their finished pieces in a digital journal compiled for FYACS by our creative HS team.

Teen Writing – Family Photos

How can a picture serve as an entry point into a story? In this workshop, you will bring in a family photograph that is special to you. We will look at a few examples of essays whose authors used photos to do creative storytelling. You’ll use your photograph to do some descriptive writing and then explore the time period when the photograph was taken. By the end of class, you’ll have created a flash essay that widens the lens beyond your family photo–you may be surprised by how much you have to say!

**Participants have the opportunity to publish their finished pieces in a digital journal compiled for FYACS by our creative HS team.


Teen Writing – Natural Wonders

From the big open sky to the smallest ladybug, writing about nature offers a way to better understand ourselves. In this workshop, we will use essays from Aimee Nezhukumatathil’s book, World of Wonders, as inspiration for writing about our relationships with the natural world. We’ll start by reading a few of her short essays. Then you’ll choose an object from nature–a plant or animal or place–that is special to you, and we will write flash essays that explore the relationship between you and that element of nature.

**Participants have the opportunity to publish their finished pieces in a digital journal compiled for FYACS by our creative HS team.

This is an opportunity for guidance and feedback in drawing, watercolor, acrylic painting, and mixed media. Sara will take a maximum of 6 artists from beginning to intermediate levels and help you to create a personal goal based on interest and ability. This is a great way to get started with your “I’ve always wanted to….” art goals. Because of the independent nature of the class, there is no supply list, but the instructor will get in touch with you ahead of time about what supplies you should bring, based on your interests.


Adult Painting

Adults! Come learn or build on your painting skills in the water-based painting media of your choice. Work in acrylics or in watercolors to create your pieces, with instruction specific to your desired project. Monthly Writing Session – Natural Wonders Workshop

In this month’s Adult Writing Session, you’re in for a treat with FYACS inaugural Writing and Teaching Fellow, Neema Avashia. In this workshop, writers will use essays by Brian Doyle and Aimee Nezhukumatathil as inspiration for writing about our relationships with the natural world. We’ll start by reading a few short essays. Then you’ll choose an object from nature–a plant or animal or place–that has meaning to you, and we will write flash essays of 500-750 words that explore the relationship between you and that element of nature.


Monthly Writing Session – Perspective

Whose story is it? How does manipulating the point of view in a piece of writing impact its delivery, its tone. even its success?  In this month’s creative writing session, we’ll explore the idea of perspective (otherwise known as point of view) by engaging with various prompts and taking a look at examples by writers who manipulate point of view with great effect. This session will meet in person as well as live, via Zoom.

After School Art Club – Mondays

This is a semi structured, arts after school program for students in 4th and 5th grade. Small group activities will be run by HS staff, supervised by Kris Rodolico, FYACS Director. There will be outside time (weather permitting), structured art activities, open art time, and homework/reading time. Transportation not provided.
